Located in Middlesex County, MA, Tewksbury sits about 25 miles north of Boston and has a population of about 30,000 people. The community is named after the town of Tewkesbury, England; and was once the settlement of the Shawshin tribe, in the area located near the Shawsheen River—which runs through the southern end of the town. The Merrimack River forms part of the northern boundary. Today, Tewksbury is home to Tewksbury Hospital, a state-owned facility that was originally built as an almshouse in the mid-19th century; as well as a high school, two junior high schools, and four elementary schools.
